Angie Trelstad is currently President of Sunless Beauty, Ltd., manufacturers of the latest sunless tanning science technology. She has been working in the cosmetics industry to advance safe, alternatives to tanning in the sun for over seven years. Angie has been featured in many beauty magazines, newspaper and television interviews as an expert in the sunless tanning industry. Her years of working in this industry have increased her awareness to the dangers of skin cancer and aging from the sun. Angie's sister was diagnosed with melanoma in the fall of 2006. This shock fueled her passion to raise the publics' awareness to the dangers of sun exposure. "My sister is one of those people who never tans except with self tanners and applies sunscreen religiously, everyday," said Trelstad, "so I was shocked when she was diagnosed with skin cancer." The doctor explained the facts to us:
- A person's chance of developing melanoma later in life is directly related to sun exposure before the age of eighteen.
- One blistering sunburn in childhood nearly doubles the risk of developing melanoma later in life.
After hearing these facts, it was apparent that the way to decrease the risk of skin cancer is to begin education and awareness in the schools, and to cover the kids! This is our mission with the Shade Across America Program. When our kids are out in the sun, we need to make certain they are protected, it is important to educate, but also, to cover.
